Craft Spells…

Arcana is a TTRPG spellcraft simulator, designed to turn magic into a realistic experience.

As a player, you begin your academic career with a few basic components to craft spells with. Throughout your studies, experiments, and expeditions, your repertoire will expand and evolve into a singular β€” perfectly unique β€” book of spells that illustrates your journey.

…with Limitless Potential

The kinds of spells you create have no limit other than your imagination.

You can craft spells to conjure creatures or imbue yourself with their aspects. You can write charms to never again lose your wallet or keys. If you so wish you can formulate evocations to materialize opulent extradimensional boudoirs in which to gleefully recline, basking in your own marvelous power!

You will soon find the prescribed spell lists of other games as drab as a value meal menu.

Define your Bloodline…

Play as a human if you wish; if not, then play as whatever pleases you, so long as you achieve your ambitions.

In Arcana, you decide your character's race, but not only that, you may choose their specific lineage. Perhaps the blood of dragons runs through your veins; what effect does this have on your magic? That is for you to decide.

…and Your Own Style of Fantasy

The laws of fantasy are fickle things, different for every gaming group, and indeed every individual.

Arcana is designed to turn magic into a realistic experience. But if you β€” in your defiant, unfettered spirit β€” wish to toss aside the conventional laws of physics and the universe then by all means do so!

Use only as much of Arcana’s crunchy game mechanics and rules as you please. Your table, your game, your law of the multiverse.

Group, Duet, & Solo Play

Gameplay in Arcana follows the same basic structure as most adventure RPGs. However, it can also be played as a duet or solo journaling game with rules that cultivate narrative for your character to experience and grow within, where your spellbook doubles as your chronicle.

Social & Combat Mechanics

Your story is not likely to be one without conflict to resolve, but your magic will support you in all endeavors.

When the time comes to battle for your ambitions, you will use a unique and empowering process to engage your foes. Additionally, Arcana features a system for social encounters that is just as robust and objective as combat.

FAQ

Is this a D&D-like? πŸ«±πŸ¦‹

We don't really think of it that way, but if you're familiar with D&D you'll feel right at home playing Arcana. Compared to D&D, Arcana is: β€’ More exploration based. Other TTRPGs are basically about killing monsters and getting treasure. There's a place for that in Arcana, but the main focus is on exploring a fantasy world and using your findings to advance your own magical ability, and perhaps that of the entire academic field of spellcraft! β€’ Way more customizable in terms of character options and abilities for both players and GMs. β€’ Considerably crunchier than D&D for some gaming tables. If your table like to play with lots of crunch, the standard rules of the game will appeal greatly! If your table doesn't like crunching numbers, Arcana enables and encourages you to run it "on vibes". β€’ Class-free! In Arcana, you don't pick a class that rigidly defines what your character can or can't do. You simply decide what you want your character to be able to do and then pursue that goal in-game! You can certainly take inspiration from classic fantasy tropes, but you get to decide how to do it. If you want to play a druid, you'll study plants and animals to incorporate them into your spells. If you want to play an eldritch knight, you'll study the blade and invent creative spells to enhance your combat ability. β€’ In some ways deadlier than D&D. Hit points are much lower in Arcana compared to other TTRPGs, but character death is harder to achieve. You're far more likely to be injured than die from taking damage. It's up to you to use your magic to protect and heal yourself and others!

Is it easy to learn? 😬πŸͺ„

If you have experience playing other TTRPGs, you're 90% done learning how to play Arcana. Creating a character is faster and more straightforward than most RPGs depending on how detailed you choose to be with your lineage and skills. Crafting your first spell can be intimidating, but once you've done it, you'll be filling up your spellbook with great ideas and even coming up with spells on the fly!

What do I need to play? πŸŽ²πŸ—ΊοΈ

If you're a player, all you need are dice and your character sheet, which is available in print and digital formats. You can also substitute your character sheet with a blank journal. GMs will need their own setting, or one they're familiar with from another world. Arcana is setting agnostic, so you can run your adventures in your favorite settings. We only change the way that wizardry works, so if you choose to run an adventure set in Baldur's Gate, the only thing you'd change is D&D's concept of "the weave". We're working on a setting book next, stay tuned!
